Hackathon

Think. Solve. Build
Hackathon

Skills for learning, life and the world of work

Hackathon

Students work in structured teams to identify a real problem, design a solution, build a visible concept and pitch it all in two hours. A fast-paced design sprint that equips students with hands on, future-ready skills.

Tomorrow's Skills, Built in a Day

Can your students solve real-world problems, think critically, collaborate under pressure and pitch ideas with confidence? Hackathons deliver a high-energy, curriculum-aligned experience that is low-prep for teachers and unforgettable for students.

Students move through five fast-paced phases inside a single 120-minute block: they form teams, diagnose the problem, brainstorm a solution, develop a concept, and then deliver their concept to a panel of judges. All phone-free, face-to-face and under real pressure.

What Students Will Do

  • Drop In — Form teams and open the sealed Hackathon Box to discover their challenge brief
  • Decode — unpack the challenge and define the real problem: who's affected and what needs to change
  • Design — move through four fast brainstorming rounds: generate, group, vote and choose
  • Develop — bring the idea to life in a build sprint, then strengthen it with peer feedback
  • Deliver — pitch the solution in 90 seconds

We bring everything: Hackathon boxes, student workbooks, pitch materials and all resources needed to run the day. Teachers can simply show up and facilitate alongside us. Pre and post-lesson packs included to extend the learning impact even futher.

Years: 7-12

Curriculum Links

Hackathons align to the Victorian Curriculum F–10 Version 2.0 for students in Years 7–10, and to the VCE Vocational Major for senior students in Years 11–12. For Years 7–10, the program supports the following learning areas and capabilities:
  • Technologies – Design and Technologies
  • Humanities – Economics and Business
  • Critical and Creative Thinking capability
  • Personal and Social capability
For Years 11–12, the program provides an applied context for the VCE Vocational Major. The two-hour sprint exercises the employability skills that underpin the VM: communication, planning and organising, teamwork, problem solving, self-management, and initiative and enterprise. It supports outcomes across:
  • Work Related Skills – communication and collaboration; teamwork and positive working relationships; problem-solving, planning and decision-making; and the design-process thinking used in community and workplace projects
  • Personal Development Skills – teamwork and effective group work; problem-solving and project planning; leadership and self-management; and working with others toward a shared goal
The program can be used as a standalone applied-learning activity or integrated across VM studies, in line with the VM's flexible, integrated delivery model.
This program can be customised to meet your school’s desired learning outcomes.
